Pre-War & Forties

1940s Mutoscope Pin-Ups PSA Set Break

Fifties

Vintage story cards offer a fascinating glimpse into the fads and fantasies of times past - whether they be Science Fiction, Historical Interest, War Stories or Entertainment figures. Competing on the shelves with more popular Sports cards, the Non-Sports issues were frequently found with very colorful and often intricate wrappers and display boxes. In many cases, the wrapper and pack are miniature works or art - often more interesting and appealing than the cards themselves.

Of course, kids of the day may have found the wrappers an enticement, they were no doubt torn open and tossed out with startling regularity. Ironically, this behavior has left the packs, wrappers and boxes tremendously scarcer than the cards they once housed.

We recently added a fantastic collection of vintage Non-Sports Cards wrappers - from 50s icons Elvis Presley and Davy Crockett to the exploits of attacking Martians and Maxwell Smart - we've got it so Check 'em Out!

Throughout the 40s, Pin Up artwork came into vogue as pulp magazines and arcade machines reached an eager audience. Published by Exhibit in the 40s, the Pin Up set of 64 is by far the most popular - and also among the finest pin-up artwork of the time. Coupled with the suggestive captions, many of these pieces were reused for the 1944 American Beauty set.

1956 Flags of the World

Topps issued this colorful 80 card set of Flags of the World in 1956. The set is interesting today to collectors because it represents a Cold War version of geography which has changed steadily over time. We recently picked up a large run in fairly high grade of this colorful favorite.

Each card in this 55 card Topps issue contains a picture or slogan about the Beatles. The cards could be hooked together in a chain by punching out three pre-scored cardboard pieces and thus exposing the slots on each card. As with any card issue designed to be mutilated by kids of the day, the Beatles Plaks set is considerably scarce in high grade.
