1933-34 Ice KingsIssued between 1933 and 1934 by World Wide Gum, this 72 card set known as Ice Kings features the cardboard debuts of many of the game's greats. Similar in style to the american Goudey issues, the colorized black and white photos are very attractive and popular with advanced collectors. The set features the rookie cards of HOFers Dit Clapper and Ace Bailey, as well as early cards of Morenz, Joliet and Clancy. |
1936-37 World Wide GumWorld Wide Gum followed up its 1933-34 effort with a much larger 135 card set featuring black and white photos. The backs are printed in English and French. Despite their rather crude appearance, the set features all of the game's early greats and is difficult to complete in higher grade. |
1952-53 Parkhurst HockeyParkhurst increased the card size in its 1952 hockey release, while keeping the set size to a count of 105. The color and design showed improvement from its inaugural set. The set again features cards from the six NHL teams. |
1953-54 Parkhurst HockeyParkhurst increased the size of its set in 1953 with this 100 card set featuring players from all six teams. The card fronts with its sharp full color drawings represent a strong improvement over the companies initial two issues. The card backs offer a short bio in both French and English. Key rookie cards in the set include Al Arbour, Andy Bathgate, Harry Howell, Gump Worsley and all-time great Jean Beliveau. |
1954-55 Parkhurst HockeyParkhurst issued a 100 card set in 1954 which feaured players from all six teams. The key rookie in the set is Johnny Bower, although several cards feature rookie Jacque Plante in action - the year before his actual rookie card. |
1954-55 Topps HockeyTopps introduced its first Hockey set in 1954, consisting of 60 cards featuring the players of the four American hockey teams - Boston, Chicago, New York and Detroit. The sets bottom border are designed with the team's color, making them extremely condition sensitive to wear or chipping. The inclusion of the first Topps card of Gordy Howe makes this set the 'benchmark' Topps set for the 50s. |
1957 Topps HockeyTopps Hockey sets featured only the four American teams - Bruins, Rangers, Black Hawks and Red Wings - leaving those Canadien teams to Parkhurst for the 50's and into the 60's. |
1957-58 Parkhurst HockeyParkhurst issued its smallest set to date - a 50 card classic which features the rookie cards of Frank Mahovlich and Henri Richard. The set marked a return to the market by Parhurst after a one-year absence. In addition to many of the game's greats, the set also features the rookies of Ed Chadwick, Andre Pronovost, Charlie Hodge, Bob Baun and Bob Pulford. |
1959-60 Parkhurst HockeyParkhurst issued a 50 card set in 1959 featuring only the Canadian teams, Montreal and Toronto. Fortunately for collectors, these two teams contained much of the talent in the league and the set features all-time greats such as Richard, Beliveau, Plante, Bower, Mahovlich and Horton. Key rookies in the set are Carl Brewer and Punch Imlach. |
1959 Topps Hockey
Topps 1959 release was
its third consecutive standard set of 66 cards featuring players from
American teams. Similar in design to the 1957 set, the set features may of
the major stars of the period such as Gordie Howe, Eddie Shack, and the
Golden Jet, Bobby Hull. |
