Topps FootballTopps 264 card 1970 Football set was released in two series, with the 2nd series again being the tougher to find. The set features an oval portrait of each player, accented with a pennant showing the player name and team and a football showing the position. The key rookie card from the set is O.J. Simpson, with other notables including Alan Page, Bubba Smith, Fred Dryer, Leroy Brown, Jan Stenerud, Calvin Hill and Bob Trumpy. |
Topps FootballThe 263 card set was released by Topps in 1971 in wax and 33 card cello packs. The NFL players in the set are displayed on cards with blue borders, the AFL players on cards with red borders. The colorful cards are reminiscient of the earlier 1963 Topps Football set. Key rookie cards include Terry Bradshaw, Joe Greene, Willie Lanier and Ken Houston. |
Topps FootballThe 1972 set was Topps' last to be issued in series form. The 88 card high number series was met with considerable disinterest by collectors, prompting a large number of cases to be wholesaled by Topps to a handful of dealers and not released to the market. About 10 years ago, these high numbers were of considerable scarcity, today they are much more difficult than the other series but nevertheless available as those dealer's begun selling off their unopened stock. The set features the rookies of Roger Staubach, Jim Plunkett Gene Upshaw, and John Riggins among others. |
Topps FootballTopps largest issue to date at 528 cards, the 1973 Football set was the first football issue released all at one time - instead of individual series. The increase from 351 to 528 coincided with the cutback by Topps in their Baseball set from 787 to 660, mirroring the shift in attitudes nationally toward football's emergence as our National Game. The set contains many important rookie cards including Ken Stabler, Franco Harris, Jack Ham, Art Shell and Jack Tatum - all fixtures in the playoffs throughout Football's most important decade, the 70s. |
Topps FootballTopps issued a 528 card football set in 1975 - the third lack-luster set in as many years. The design featured large player photos, players name, and a baseball-style pennant containing the team name. The set's notable rookie is Dan Fouts, but many other star rookies were also included such as Lynn Swann, Mel Blount, Drew Pearson and Joe Theismann - who appeared earlier in a CFL set. |
Topps FootballTopps issued another 528 card set in 1977 minus player helmets or team logos. The card's clean design and sharper photos make it a marked improvement on the 1973-1975 issues. The set contains the rookie card of Steve Largent - one time all-time reception leader. Other notable rookies include Chuck Muncie, Harry Carson and Archie Griffin. |
Topps FootballTopps issued its 4th consecutive 528 card set in 1978 - continuing its decade long practice of showing players without helmets or with logos airbrushed. The set contains the rookie card of HOFer Tony Dorsett, along with other notable rookies such as Johnny Rodgers, Stanely Morgan, Wesley Walker and John Stallworth. |
Topps FootballTopps airbrush reached its pinnacle in 1979 as its 528 card release features hundreds of players in helmets - sans team logos. The 1979 season and its exciting super bowl is fondly remembered by fans as the team of the decade - the Pittsburgh Steelers - won their 4th Super Bowl in six seasons. The set features the only card appearances of HOF running back Earl Campbell, plus the rookie cards of James Lofton, Doug Williams, and Steve DeBerg. |
