1960 Topps Football

Topps 1960 Football issue covered only the NFL teams - with Fleer covering the AFL. The design is a 'pure photo' front with the players name, team and position in an oversized football. The set features the rookie cards of HOFer Forrest Gregg and Tom Brookshier.

1961 Fleer Football

The 220 card set by Fleer was the only one of their football releases to included both NFL and AFL players. Issued in two series, the NFL players numbered 1-132 while the AFL players were 133-220. The higher series cards are much more difficult that the lower, though high grade examples of either series are not plentiful. The set features the rookie cards of Don Meredith, Tom Flores, Don Maynard and Jim Otto - the latter two were also included in the Topps 1961 set.

1961 Topps Football

Topps expanded to 198 cards by adding 66 AFL player cards. The set's clean appearance makes this a collectors favorite. The first 132 cards of the set cover the NFL and features the rookie of John Brodie and the first card appearance of Packer great Jim Taylor - he was included in the company's 1959 and 1960 issues but both times the card featured linebacker Jim Taylor in error.

1962 Fleer Football

Fleer cut back to 88 cards in this AFL-only set. Compared to the creative design of the 1961 issue, the 1962 Fleer issue are fairly generic in design. The set is typically found with cards severely off-center. The set's key rookie is Gino Cappelletti.

1962 Topps Football

This 176 card set is the toughest of the decade to complete in high grade condition, this due to the black borders which are more prone to chipping or wear. Like the 1957 set, whose motif this set resembles, the 1962 set is one of the most coveted of the 60s due to the inclusion of high powered rookies such as Mike Ditka, Fran Tarkenton, Roman Gabriel, Bill Kilmer and Ernie Davis. Who? Davis won the 1961 Heisman trophy and then tragically died early in his career making this his only football card.

1963 Fleer Football

Fleer's final football issue in 1963 was far and away its most popular. The striking red and white designs frame color photos of the players, many appearing in action poses. The set has many notable aspects including an impossible to find checklist card. Two very difficult single prints (Long and Dougherty), and HOF rookies of Lance Alworth, Len Dawson, Cookie Gilchrist and Nick Buoniconti. A must own football set from the league's golden decade.

1963 Topps Football

Shade of the 1975 Topps baseball set, the company's 1963 regular football issue combined odd color combinations to produce a colorful and condition sensitive set. Complete at 170 cards, the set contains key rookies of many of the top defensive stars of the decade including Deacon Jones, Bob Lilly, Ray Nitschke, Willie Wood and Jim Marshall. The company's final NFL set until 1968, this also marked the fifth consecutive - and final - year that Topps reserved the #1 card for the great Johnny Unitas.

1964 Philadelphia Football

Philadelphia took over from Fleer as Topps' primary competitor in football cards, issuing the first of its four 198 cards sets in 1964. The set featured NFL only players, ending Topps eight year association with the senior circuit. The set is also notable for the Cleveland Brown cards - which feature the players posed kneeling in front of a 1964 model Ford. Printed in large quantities but nevertheless popular, the 1964 Philadelphia set features the rookies of Merlin Olsen, John Mackey, Herb Adderly, Jack Pardee and Tom Matte.

1964 Topps Football

Topps switched leagues as Philadelphia took over printing NFL cards while Topps produced the first of its four straight AFL only sets. The sets design is somewhat sparse, but the 1964 Topps football set contains many tough single prints, making it one of the toughest sets to complete in high grade. Key rookie cards include Daryle Lamonica, Buck Buchanon, John Hadl, Bobby Bell and Matt Snell.

1965 Philadelphia Football

Philadelphia Gum's 2nd football issue was a marked improvement on its initial one in terms of card design. The set again featured subsets such as Team cards and Team Play cards, but improved the photographs significantly. The key rookie cards include Charlie Taylor, Paul Warfield and Carl Eller.

1965 Topps Football

The 1965 Topps Football set contains 176 oversized cards or "Tall Boys" of American Football League players. Since the set was not printed in standard fashion, many of the cards were printed in lesser quantities than others. These "single prints" make this set a challenge for advanced collectors. The set contains two single printed rookie cards which are among the most desirable of the decade - #122 Joe Namath and #133 Fred Biletnikoff. This is Topps' benchmark football set for the decade.

1966 Philadelphia Football

Philly's 1966 Football set is by far the most attractive of the four, thanks in large part to the beautiful green card backs and the use of sharper and more interesting photos. The set features the rookie cards of Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus, two all-time greats who arrived in Chicago in successive years but did little to reverse the team's fortunes. The set contains many innovative touches including the first ever football 'combo cards' and referee signal cards.

1966 Topps Football

Eleven years after purchasing rival Bowman, Topps borrowed its famous 1955 Television motif for this classic football issue. Featuring the 2nd year card of Broadway Joe, the brown faux wood panel borders make this highly condition sensitive set. Other key rookie cards include Otis Taylor, Jim Turner and George Sauer.

1967 Philadelphia Football

The Philadelphia Chewing Gum Co. ceased production of football cards after this 198 card, NFL-only issue. The cards have distinctive yellow borders but allow for little else in terms of creativity. The key rookies include Tommy Nobis, Leroy Kelly and LeRoy Jordan. Also notable is card 123 which features Paul Hornung with on a Saints card despite the fact he retired earlier in the summer rather than play for the expansion Aints.

1967 Topps Football

The last of Topps four consecutive AFL only sets, the 1967 Topps set is famous for its "Summer Of Love" motif in which the team logos and colors were arranged in the manner of famous psychedlic rock posters of the day. The cards were sold in "hot pink" display boxes and the Checklist cards are truly groovy. The set's only rookie of note is Miami linebacker - and future wrestling star - Wahoo McDaniel.

1968 Topps Football

Topps largest football set to date also coincided with the demise of Philly Gum and the re-introduction by Topps of both AFL and NFL players. The card style was almost identical to its 1968 hockey set, except that it showed players from the league champion Raiders and Packers in a horizontal layout against a stylized football backdrop. Key rookies include Bob Griese, Joe Kapp, Craig Morton and Jack Snow.

1969 Topps Football

The 1969 Topps FB set is a classic in contrasts - the lower numbers featured full color borders which make this set difficult to obtain in high grade condition while the higher numbers are much scarcer in quantity. The set features the rookie cards of Bryan Piccolo, in his only card appearance, Larry Csonka, Lance Rentzel and Mike Curtis.
