  Collector Sets
Throughout the years, a variety of Sports Cards sets were released without the "official" sanction of Major League Baseball. Sometimes in wax packs and sometimes in boxed form, sets like Gallaso, TCMA, Swell, Pacific, Fleer, SSPC and scores of other helped to fill gaps in the collector marketplace. These sets were often found in the form of "subsets - greatest hitters, All Time Cubs, World Series Highlights, etc.

These sets often featured more obscure players from the past along side all-time greats such as DiMaggio, Greenberg and Williams. As such, they quickly became popular with Autograph Collectors, who want the autograph without on a sharp looking card without the expense of the underlying vintage cardboard.

The grand-daddy of these collector sets for signed card collectors was the 1960 and 1961 Fleer issues, which also happened to feature a number of Hall Of Fame players from the dead ball era who lived long enough to provide the hobby with a handful of signed copies. In the 70s, with Topps card monopoly on current players unchallenged, numerous sets sprang up featuring players who never had a playing card, previously available only on 3x5 index cards. In 1983 Topps "reprinted" its own classic 1952 Topps set - making a $50,000 investment available to autograph collectors for as little as $35. This event kicked off a series of reprints throughout the 80s including most 40s and 50s sets from Topps and Bowman.

Finally, companies cashing in on the collecting boom of the 80s such as K-Mart, Woolworth, Kraft, Nestle, Dorman, Mother's Cookies, Purina and so on - issued a number of set to the collector market which ultimately became more of interested to signed card collectors.

Though most of our inventories are organized by year or decade, we've put together our Signed Inventory of "Collector Sets" here all in one spot for the benefit of our Collector Signed Card customers.
1948  Bowman Reprints Signed

Issued in 1978, this popular reprint set of Bowman's first baseball issue is a popular set with collectors due to its heavy inclusion of reprints of popular rookie Hall Of Famers - who were alive and signing during the period of the set's issue. Examples include Berra, Spahn, Kiner and Musial.

1953 Topps Baseball Archives Signed

Topps produced this 337 card set in 1991 as a follow-up to its popular 1952 reprint issue. The set reprinted 273 of the original 274 1953 Topps cards and then added more than 50 players who didn't have original 1953 cards - legends such as Ted Williams and Hank Aaaron. The set's production was limited but the collector demand was primarily for Autograph seekers, looking to build an economical version of the signed 1953 set.

1953 Bowman Color Reprints Signed

These 1953 Bowman Color reprints hit the market in 1989 as a low cost way to collect this classic 50s set. As with most reprint sets, this one quickly became popular with Autograph collectors.

Dover Reprints Signed

Beginning in the late 70s and throughout the 80s, the Dover company produced books featuring replica playing cards - not unlike the Golden Press issues of the early 60s. The cards were reprints of classic pre-war sets and more recent Hall of Famers. Because the cards were perforated in sheets, they are frequently found with trimmed borders.

Pre-War & Tobacco Reprints Signed

Virtually every pre-war and tobacco set was reprinted during the 80s - primarily because of the prohibitive costs of the originals.

1979 Diamond Greats  Set Break!

This comprehensive set of 400 players was issued in 1979 and featured 100s of long-forgotten players from the 20s and 30s. Blank-backed, the set features solid b/w photos along with lifetime stats, position and team identification. This one fills as a great alternative to 3x5 cards for collectors looking for signed items of players without a major baseball card.

Our set was featured in a Nat'l catalog auction and has many sharp signatures - mostly pen!

1982 - 1992 Donruss Diamond Kings Signed

Beginning with its 1982 issue, Donruss included a 26 card subset featuring the artwork of Dick Perez or the Perez-Steele galleries. The subset known as Diamond Kings featured many of the stars of the day - and also gave Signed Card collectors an accessible way to collect signatures of the top players from that year without worrying about getting a Paul Mirabella et al.

For your convenience, we've created a stand alone view of signed card inventory of Donruss Diamond Kings.

1983 Donruss Hall of Fame Heroes Signed

Donruss issued this 44 card set in separate wax packs in 1983 along with a Mickey Mantle puzzle piece. The set featured the artwork of Dick Perez - famed creator of the Perez-Steele Hall of Fame sets. A bit over half the set featured living Hall of Famers - making it a collector's favorite to collect for signatures.

1980s Big League Cards Signed

Former pitcher Jim Bouton founded the Big League Cards company during the 80s. The company produced custom baseball cards, and was used by little leaguers and unknown big leaguers alike to create authentic looking cards for themselves. Collectors used the company to create cards in order to complete their team sets - creating a potential signed piece for players who did not have a contemporary card during their careers.

1988-89 Pacific Baseball Legends Signed

Pacific issued this 220 card set in two series of 110 cards over the years 1988 and 1989. The set featured very nice photos of former major league players in a beautifully designed card set. The set features original Hall of Famers such as Ruth and Gehrig, but also emphasized players of recent times such as Santo, Bench and Hunter. Given the large percentage of living players included, the set quickly became popular among Autograph collectors looking to build an economical set of the game's recent greats.

1990 Pacific Baseball Legends Signed

Pacific followed up its 1988/89 issue with another 110 card set in 1990. The set repeated many of the players from the previous issue - but was designed to be very heavy in the recent Hall of Famers of the 70s and 80s - featuring 40 players who were then or future Hall of Famers. The set also featured only living players. As a result, the set quickly became popular among Autograph collectors looking to build an economical set of the game's recent greats.
