Exhibit Baseball AutoThe Exhibit Company of Chicago issued postcards throughout the 40s and 50s on a variety of subjects - from naval vessels and birds to pin-ups. Most popular today is the 1947-1966 Exhibit cards featuring major league baseball players. Due to the use of black and white photos and the paucity of information on the cards, the generic Exhibit cards have never especially popular with collectors. However, due to its wide range of subject they continue to be popular vehicles for collecting player autographs. |
1961
Golden Press AutoGolden Press issued a 33 card set in bound books in 1961. The books contained color cards featuring Hall of Famers which were perforated to allow for easy removal and collection as individual cards. The set contains all the game's early greats such as Ruth and Cobb - but the gorgeous color renderings made for great autograph pieces for the its surviving stars. Tough signatures include Mickey Cochrane (d.62), Rogers Hornsby (d.63) and Jimmie Foxx (d.67). |
1964
Topps Giants AutoThis premium set was issued in separate wax packs by Topps during the summer of 1964. The oversized cards may be one of the company's most unique - full color photos with almost a postcard motif featuring the stars of the day. Due to the brilliant photos and general availability of the 64 Giants, they are extremely popular with Autograph collectors. |
1967
Dexter Postcards Auto Dexter Press produced this set covering 18 of the 20 major league teams featuring beautiful color photos. Distributed as a promotion by Coca-cola, the Dexter Postcards are very popular among autograph collectors due to their uncluttered design and glossy finish. |
Hall
of Fame Plaque B/W From its opening in 1939, the Cooperstown Hall of Fame has attracted millions of fans intent on learning about the history of our National pastime. The gift shop at the Hall sold postcards featuring the HOF bust of the enshrined players. Once a penny souvenir, these postcards have become very popular with collectors - especially those seeking autographs of HOFers. What better vehicle for capturing HOF autographs than on a reproduction of the signer's actual HOF plaque! |
Hall
of Fame Plaque Goldin 1964, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown switched vendors and updated its classic postcard series with a new yellow motif. These familiar Hall of Fame plaques are probably the most commonly collected item for HOF autographs in the hobby. Values of the autographed postcards are more dependent on how much time a player lived beyond his induction date. For that reason, obtaining certified autographs of several plaques presents a difficult challenge for the advanced autograph collector. Examples of these with book values in ( ): Heinie Manush ($350), Ray Schalk ($350) , Elmer Flick ($450) and Goose Goslin ($2250). Penny postcards indeed! |
Autograph
BB PostcardsAll throughout the 40s and into the 50s, Team Issued Postcards were sold thoughout the major leagues. In some cases, the Photo Packs were available as mail-in premiums. Others were simply sold at the stadium. While the commemorative postcards generally features only stars and HOFers, the Team Issue postcards might cover the whole squad, offering many collectors their only glimpse at those war year and early fifties players that didn't make the early Leaf or Bowman sets. Despite the exclusive use of Black and White photos, these early vintage postcards may be very popular with advanced autograph collectors. |
