Baseball MagazineBaseball Magazine was the premier baseball publication throughout 20s, 30s and 40s, providing sports fans with in depth coverage and great action photography of baseball of the period. Stars such as Joe Jackson, Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth appeared on its covers. Beginning in the late 40s, competition from the full color Sport Magazine caused some drop-off in readership. Soon after, Sports Illustrated raised the bar for photo oriented coverage of sports and the venerable Baseball Magazine disappeared from the market in 1957. |
Blueline MagazineBeginning with the 1954-55 NHL season, the Hockey Blueline Magazine provided rink-wide coverage of the early NHL. With only eight original teams, the league was at its competitive peak. Blue Line magazine ran for five seasons, ending production after its May 1959 issue. Players featured on numerous of its color covers include Howe, Richard, Plante and Beliveau. |
Hockey MagazinesHockey has always had an extremely loyal fan base. Over the years, numerous Hockey Magazines have appeared on the market - including the long-running feature magazines Hockey Pictorial and Hockey Illustrated. In 1972, a spin-off of the Digest series called Hockey Digest appeared. Earlier, Hockey News, a Hockey-only version of Sporting News provided in-depth ice coverage. |
Sport MagazineSport Magazine was always considered a poor cousin to the more popular Sports Illustrated. Unlike SI, Sport focused almost entirely on Baseball and Football, featuring strong articles which were more written from a fan's perspective rather than the SI model of investigative reporting. The Sport Quiz was a "must do" in the Sixties. |
Sports IllustratedSports Illustrated is the most collectible of the sport magazines. Beginning in 1955, the early years of the magazine featured a wide variety of "sports" including Boating and Skiing. During the mid-sixties, the magazine shifted its emphasis on the covers to single cover star photos - making the SI cover a coveted publicity vehicle in the process. |
